Increasing sophistication in the global offshore oil and gas sector relies upon floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) platforms. Such platforms can provide safe, economical and environmentally friendly approaches to access needed global energy resources. A key feature in this developing picture involves separation technology based on polymer-derived asymmetric carbon molecular sieve membranes. This presentation explains why the unique nature of asymmetric carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membranes can provide affordable high performance separations for challenging natural gas feeds. Besides discussing the unique fit of such membranes for the global offshore oil and gas sector, status and projections regarding this key chemical engineering separation technology will be presented.
