Lithium therapy is the gold-standard treatment for bipolar disorder, yet suffers from a narrow therapeutic range and high potential for toxicity. As a result, lithium therapy is accompanied by frequent monitoring of serum lithium levels, which is costly and laborious. To address these challenges, we have developed a novel lithium formulation that enables controlled release that minimizes the potential for toxicity. In addition to completing drug release studies, we have extensively characterized this formulation via SEM, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy to understand the mechanism of lithium incorporation into the formulation in various bodily fluids. This characterization and understanding will inform further optimization of the formulation while simultaneously shedding light on the possible interactions between lithium and other elements.
