(24g) The Dual Nature of Chemical Reaction Engineering

Authors

Rawlings, J. - Presenter, University of California, Santa Barbara
A textbook by our honoree starts with the following statement:
"Chemical reactors are at the core of the chemical engineering
discipline, and chemical reactor analysis and design is one of the
distinguishing courses that clearly separates the chemical engineers
from the other engineering professionals."

This talk surveys the experiences of the honoree and one of his co-authors in
creating a textbook for this subject. We present many of the behind-the-scenes
challenges that were faced and pedagogical choices that were made during
that book writing journey.

Next some discussion of joint research on the topic of chemical vapor deposition of
silicon and germanium thin films is presented.

From these teaching and research perspectives some lessons on the dual
nature of the subject of chemical reaction engineering are revealed.
