The processing power of single-board computers (i.e., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Jettison, etc.) allows for high throughput real-time data processing. Python is the primary language used within Raspberry Pi due to its versatility, usability, and extensive libraries, which grant the ability to easily access and manipulate incoming and outgoing data. Using the integrated GPIO pinout on a Raspberry Pi, 4-20 mA data can be acquired for any valves and instruments producing or acquiring this signal. Armed with the hardware and software to perform I/O, a heated continuous stirred tank experiment is controlled using <$400 worth of electronics. Students gain experience and understanding in process controls using control valves and gathering data which can increase their level of learning within the course. This presentation serves as a basis for others who want to teach students Python while also incorporating process controls, data acquisition, and control system integration.
