Electrochemical diagnostics are critical to monitor patient health and diagnose disease. However, materials developed to enable these technologies remain extremely costly or highly inconsistent. I have developed a platform technology for the diagnosis of infectious disease by harnessing the inherent materials properties of edible gold leaf and combining that with biomaterials modification. Using this platform, we can rapidly detect HPV, a virus that causes cancer, and distinguish between respiratory illnesses.
