Inclusive teaching can be described in many ways. The narrative varies due to the framing by contextual factors associated with the program or institution. At its core, the two fundamental elements that emerge are equity and belonging. Inclusive teaching includes the creation of a teaching plan that recognizes and accounts for the diversity of the learners and strives to achieve equivalent learning outcomes for all. Further, it creates a welcoming learning environment that fosters a sense a belonging. There is a natural connection between the use of inclusive pedagogy and improved student success. While there are no one-size-fits-all solutions (due to the contextual factors of the institution and cohort), there are evidence-based strategies that work across many situations. Individual faculty members can employee classroom management techniques to build a sense of community and engineering identity. Additionally, they can use multimodal content and active learning scenarios in their teaching plans. This session will discuss the core elements of inclusive teaching and specific strategies that faculty can use in their course planning and execution.
