Zwitterions with ultrashort cation-anion distance has been considered to possess strong surface hydration and salt resistance, whereas currently such available materials are extremely rare. Herein, we tactfully take the ionic pairs readily available in ionic liquids to construct a nanoscale homogeneously charge-balanced surface with comprehensive antifouling property and high salt resistance. Taking advantage of the anion and cation tightly existed in form of the ionic pair in ionic liquids, the charge balance constructed on surface had the homogeneous spatial distribution at nanoscale. This nanoscale homogeneously charge-balanced surface exhibited a comprehensive antifouling property to diverse foulants such as natural organic matters, surfactants, and proteins, especially an excellent salt resistance to divalent ions, as well as the long-term cyclic stability with a nearly 100% recovery ratio. It is anticipated that the ionic liquid-type ionic pairs triggered surface may provide insights for the design of next-generation nonfouling materials.
