(5c) Learning on the Job: Launching an Academic Career

I will share strategies for successfully pursuing, evolving, and refining the vision that brought you to academia. This will intersect with topics regarding group management, including how to empower group members to feel ownership over the way in which the group is run and how to experiment not just in your science but in the operation of a group. Many of the changes that happen upon starting a junior faculty career involve learning on the job – doing things that you were not trained to do, and we will discuss strategies for adapting to a new set of circumstances. Mechanisms for evolving in the role will be presented as well. Overall, the strategies outlined here will provide a path to not just advancing your scientific vision but staying true to the values you hold inside and outside academia.
