The fluid-dynamic environment characterization and improvement of stirred tank bioreactors (STBRs) through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis are common steps during process development in the pharmaceutical industry. Depending on factors such as variation in the operating conditions in the reference vessel during the cell culture duration, as well as the number of vessels to which the reference vessel will be scaled-up, parameters such as velocity profiles, shear stress distribution, mixing time, and so forth are repeatedly generated and analyzed during the project lifetime. The objective of this work was to use Ansys Fluent and Python through PyFluent library in the automation of CFD process workflow for mixing analysis, to streamline the time to client and improve the quality level of CFD analysis. The following outcomes were achieved:

  • Decrease in the time to setup post-processing analysis and, therefore, the total time for delivery.
  • Increase in the standardization level across project phases, thus reducing quality issues occurrences and associated delays.
  • Augment the analysis capabilities in CFD projects by using both Ansys Fluent and Python capabilities together, enabling fit-for-purpose analysis to be delivered to the client.

This work highlighted how Ansys Fluent can be applied together with Python in order to accelerate the delivery of CFD analysis to the market without compromising quality or constraining customization for the client.
