Structural Biphasic Electrolyte Embedded Carbon Fiber for Aerospace Applications

Energy storage in aerospace is of significant interest, driven by the renewed focus on space travel. The industry requires batteries that provide high energy density, structural integrity, and can withstand extreme low temperatures. This research investigates the potential of a structural battery, capable of serving as both an energy storage and load-bearing element in an aircraft. We assessed the suitability of selected multifunctional materials and found the importance of desizing the carbon fiber and maintaining low levels of electrolyte in increasing performance. However, further improvements are necessary to optimize their performance.
