The long-term movement to energy supplies with low greenhouse gas emissions will cause many transitions in our global economy impacting both our food and energy supply chains. Three potential transitions in food and energy supply chains need to be managed effectively by companies and governments over the next 30 years to mitigate risks in meeting basic needs of nutrition and transportation. These transitions include:

  • Shifting ethanol supply chains from gasoline blending to a feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel
  • Increased production of vegetable oil-based fuels while minimizing land use changes to expand soybean or palm production
  • Expanded use of lignocellulosic materials as a primary feedstock for biofuels to address demand from aviation and maritime industries and to direct corn and soybean supply chains to meet nutritional needs of a growing population.

This presentation will look to the future on how investments in biofuel processing and infrastructure could develop based on using capital efficiently and minimizing economic disruptions through these transitions.
