Shutdown and startup flaring related to olefins plant turnarounds has been an item of concern for many years. As good stewards of our environment and surrounding communities, producers have been implementing novel approaches to significantly reduce flared pounds, with great success. Lyondell Chemical Company has implemented several flare minimization projects within its olefins sites, with the latest effort taking place at the Clinton, Iowa, facility. Combining past site efforts with those from recent successes in the company allowed the Clinton facility to reduce flared emissions by approximately 70% over previous turnaround efforts. This paper will discuss the specifics of implementing the Lyondell flare reduction strategy at the Clinton site.
