We describe the implementation of a quantitative single particle mass spectrometery for the on-the-fly characterization of the elemental composition and total mass of aerosol nanoparticles. We will describe some theoretic aspects of the laser ionization process and its relationship to quantification. We will describe the use of the instrument to investigate the metal content of soot nanoparticles. We present size and composition resolved elemental species distributions for both the nuclei mode and ultrafine portion of the accumulation mode particles. We also present results on the measurement of the size-resolved kinetics of aluminum particle oxidation, and the oxidation of composition aluminum/magnesium nanocomposites.
