(180a) Micro Reaction Technology as a Means of Chemical Process Intensification

Even though micro reactor technology has gained considerable momentum in the R&D areas of the chemical industry during the last decade only a limited number of industrial applications is known so far. This might be due to two apparent entrance barriers: Firstly, in many cases novel micro reactor technology solutions for existing production processes have to compete with already depreciated plants. This significantly affects the overall economic attractiveness. Secondly, the use and interplay of micro reactors with conventional plant technology is an issue which is still not fully resolved. In order to overcome the current status of ?being in test?, Degussa pursues micro reaction technology as a major means for intensification of chemical processes. Process intensification hereby is considered as a comprehensive management approach resulting in a new or at least modified, highly sustainable production environment for the existing and future product portfolio. To do so, it is of fundamental importance to start from a macro- and microeconomic analysis of local or regional market conditions in order to apply micro reaction technology as a problem driven and well adapted solution. In this context a modular engineering approach could be the answer how to bring this innovative technology into industrial practice. Increasing flexibility in terms of short term and cost efficient availability of production capacity will secure Degussa's competitive position in our markets today and in the future.
