Extractors such as the perforated plate column and RDC (rotating disk contactor) are widely used in various process industries. However, it has been found that they cannot attain the desirable features of high throughput, high extraction efficiency and high resistance to scum, simultaneously. Recently, the WIN TRAY extractor, the trays of which consist of column trays and weirs with windows (the name WIN is derived from windows), was developed to obtain a high-capacity and scum-resistant contactor, and its use in the petrochemical industry in Japan has been increasing. In this presentation, the concept of the new extractor, flow characteristics including the results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) study, extraction characteristics and some examples of process intensification using the WIN TRAY extractor will be presented.
