(192c) Real Time, on- Line Detection and Classification of Microorganisms Using Laser Scattering Technology

Until recently, there has been no commercially available method to detect waterborne microorganisms in real time and on line as with chemical analysis (i.e. pH, TOC, conductivity, etc.). Microbial analysis is typically by grab sample and results can take from 18 hours to 72 hours by Standard Methods procedures. Emerging technologies for improved rapid detection of harmful microorganisms are the result of increasing consumer protection requirements as well as environmental and security concerns. The presentation will outline the current status of rapid microbiological techniques including laser based multi-angle light scattering technology for continuous, on-line, real time detection and classification of microorganisms. Applications in pharmaceutical water production will also be discussed.
