Korea is one of the largest natural gas importing countries in the world. To meet the nation's ever increasing demand, Korea imported 22.2 million tons of natural gas via LNG in 2004. Korea has a diversified importing source including Qatar, Oman, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Australia. Korea has experienced an intensified process of introducing, processing and applying LNG for last decades, which makes Korea one of the highly advanced countries having LNG handling technology including safety management. In this work, Korea's effort to conduct safety management of LNG processing and application including Korean regulatory requirement for LNG import facility, the development of LNG terminals in Korea on a regulatory perspective, and overview of main elements driving safety on LNG terminals.
