Aerosolization of dry powders is often required in many industrial processes and for particle characterization. Molecular scale interactions build up strong bonds between particles making their dispersion in gases very difficult. Particle technologists today face ever decreasing particle sizes and thus increasing dispersion difficulties. Knowledge of the nature of the interparticle forces is essential to devise strategies to overcome them. Surface treatment of particles, additives and proper application of energy are potential solutions. This paper examines the fundamental properties and processes with examples from inhalation health research to industrial reactor feeding and military smokes.
