Engineering codes state that engineers must hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Engineers therefore pledge to protect the public from unacceptable risk. Implementation of this pledge however, can be challenging because of different criteria for risk estimation applied by engineers, the public, and the government. This interactive presentation will discuss issues of engineering ethics, their involvement in the assessment and management of acceptable risk, and their effect on the safety culture of the organization.
