(65c) Required Course on Sustainability at University of British Columbia

In this presentation a very innovative approach is to teaching sustainability to engineers is to have a required course for all engineers. At the University of British Colombia, Dr. Crofton teaches a required course for civil engineers titled, ?Introduction to Sustainable Development,? which is delivered using an interactive web-based format. This course insures that all engineers begin to think of sustainable development early in their educational development.

In this presentation the following will be discussed · a brief overview of the current and potential use of the Internet ? both as a resource and as a vehicle for education, information exchange, interaction, data analysis and the building of ?virtual community'; · a 'tour' of ORCAD's web-based course and materials on sustainable development and engineering.(at www.sustainability.com/orcad) which has been designed for use as a full course (undergraduate and professional development versions) or as support materials for use in existing courses; and · an outline of the work in progress and the future potential of the Internet for furthering the understanding of sustainable development.
