This paper reports an investigation of a fine particle-laden gas flowing through a long straight cylindrical column packed with spherical particles, a configuration occurring in lots of industrial processes such as filtration, drying and chemical reactions. The Eulerian based two-fluid model is used to simulate the flow behaviour. The results are compared with experimental results in terms of both hydrodynamics and solids motion. It is shown that the model predicts very well the dynamic solids hold-up of the suspended particles, and captures the main features of the radial distributions of the suspended solids concentration and the axial solids velocity. The work also leads to a new relationship for the solids hold-up, which is more generic than previously reported relationships.
