Refiners continue to come across new challenges related to crude oil desalting. As new fields are developed and transported all over the globe refiner's are looking at opportunities to process lower cost crudes. In an industry with constant changes it is sometimes difficult to dedicate the appropriate time to ensure that systems are operating at Optimum Conditions. Desalting systems are all different and each one requires a customized program.
This paper will focus on an approach that a refiner can use to optimize their current operation in a continuously changing environment. It will cover practices in the area of tank management, slop oil recovery, desalter operation and chemical programs.
