Waste oil streams are produced by many processes in a refinery. It is challenging to recover oil from the waste streams or slop oil with minimum disruption to the operation of a refinery. The first step in reprocessing these waste oils streams is to characterize them sufficiently to know how to treat the slop oil. The slop oils can be either oil in water or water in oil emulsions and this nature determines how it can best be handled. Various equipment and operational options will be discussed along with examples of chemical treatment programs showing how problem slop oils are handled in refineries.
