Regulatory agencies have pre-approved a solidifier, CIAgent?, on the NCP products schedule as a chemical countermeasure for use on spills in the United States. Compared to the performance of skimmers and absorbent booms in recovering oil and other hydrocarbon spills from water, this solidifier accomplishes astounding results in record time, cutting both time and labor costs by 50 to 75 percent with a reduced exposure to wildlife and the environment. The solidifier has also been used to meet EPA requirements for mineral oil containment in electrical transformers.
This paper investigates the mechanism for solidification using temperature and volume changes during solidification to characterize solidifier effectiveness, resulting in improved solidifier performance at lower cost. Gasoline, diesel fuel, mineral oil, and crude oil are included in the analysis.
