Commercial needs are consistently increasing the knowledge requirements for process development. As the pace of process development work increases, and the search for novel catalytic or adsorbent materials intensifies, an increased fundamental understanding of a given process is needed to gain further insight into process mechanisms and to improve testing capabilities. An integral part of addressing these needs is the development and application of advanced characterization tools. Using the proper characterization tools offers greater insight into identifying new adsorbent or catalytic materials, and also provides the fundamental parameters necessary for developing and optimizing a process. This talk will present several reactivity and adsorption characterization tools that are used at UOP during process development. The use of models necessary for both interpreting and summarizing process data will also be discussed.
