Ultra low sulfur diesel has been a reality in Germany many years prior to the recent introduction of ULSD in North America. BP's Lingen refinery has recently completed more than five years of stable operation producing <10 ppm diesel using Albemarle's KF-848 STARS catalyst. Not only did this operation meet the expectations set prior to start of cycle, the refiner was also able to increase throughput as the cycle progressed.
The Lingen case is an excellent commercial experience that will benefit North American refiners in their operational plans for structural production of ULSD. This paper will discuss the operation at Lingen and present the lessons learned from this long cycle of operation.
