Solomon Associates has conducted Comparative Performance Analysis (benchmarking) studies of the olefins industry since 1987. This paper will highlight recent trends in energy prices, energy consumption, and energy performance improvement efforts demonstrated by the industry. Energy efficiency by geographic region will be shown, in addition to an examination of the traits of the most efficient plants. Statistical correlations of energy performance to performance in other areas will be discussed, as well as the implications of integration with cogeneration units, refineries, or other petrochemicals manufacturing. The paper will discuss the implications of energy consumption differences among geographical regions and their effect on regional competitiveness in the industry. This paper will also discuss the importance of energy monitoring and energy management as a way to improve energy performance, as an alternative to (or in addition to) capital investment.
