In the United States, over the past five years, there have been growing concerns on the safety, reliability and security in process industries due to increased Homeland Security measures, revised NFPA69 standard with more focus on reliability and increased public awareness on process safety issues by the investigations done by the US Chemical Safety Board (CSB) on fatal industrial accidents. These, and other concerns, have led to the development of a new generation of explosion protection technologies that are safer, more secure and reliable with improved product performance. This paper presents two recent technological advancements in the explosion protection field: 1) introduction of a

new generation of explosion suppressor technology designed specifically to provide inherently safer features to minimize risks associated with operating and maintaining of explosion suppression systems and 2) use of optical detection technology in conjunction with dynamic pressure sensing to offer superior explosion isolation system performance especially for traditionally challenging cases where ignition occurs close to duct entrance and/or a ?sluggish? deflagration (low K value) occurs in a process vessel. The benefits of using the hybrid detection (optical & pressure) technology is demonstrated in a real life

case, where an explosion suppression & isolation system is used on a spray drying process handling an organic material.
