Activated carbon supported catalysts were prepared for Water Gas Shift (WGS) reaction. The catalysts are all bimetallic and have Pt and Au as the primary active metal for high temperature and low temperature WGS reactions (HTS and LTS), respectively. The reaction tests were conducted for tempertaure range of 200-275 oC for LTS and 300-400 oC for HTS. The results indicated that (i) the AC pretreatment procedure has a direct influence on the properties and the activity/stability characteristics of the catalysts, and (ii) bimetallic catalysts, especially Pt-Ni for HTS and Au-Ce for LTS, has superior activities compared to the monometallic reference catalysts. In the second part of the study, several AC based adsorbents were designed through changing the surface chemistry of AC by various oxidation methods. The CO2 adsorption capacity and adsorption capacity-AC surface chemistry relation was investigated. In the final stage of the study, those adsorbents were used as a physical mixture with the catalysts in the reactor aiming to shift the WGS equilibrium for higher H2 production.
