Significant international as well as local regulatory changes are limiting the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. This directly impacts existing and future fossil fuel based energy conversion facilities. The implementation of advanced combustion techniques along with renewable fuel sources in these facilities will be critical in complying with the new restrictive emissions levels. Biomass cofiring is a low cost approach to integrate a renewable energy component in existing coal-fired boilers.
This paper evaluates existing and future projects that co-utilize biomass in advanced injection schemes to assist in CO2 and other emissions reductions. Several issues such as biomass characterization, aggregation and pre-processing schemes would be discussed. Oxygen enriched combustion would be discussed as a possible approach for efficiency gains and process intensification.
