In this study an optical scanner is used to compare and rank oil stability by observing the compatibility of oils and precipitants. The Turbiscan AGS is capable of sensitively and accurately observing changes in particle concentration and size. The goal of this study is to be able to produce an automated method capable of measuring and comparing the stability of an oil solution. By modifying an existing ASTM method variance in light transmittance through the oil solution is observed and related to flocculation and sedimentation of precipitated insoluble particles.
