As microreactor based chemical processes are developed there is the need to characterize other unit operations to insure proper match. Just as microreactors benefit from real-time characterization to speed their optimization, the various other unit operations in the process can benefit from the use of on-line analysis for operation optimization. This presentation will describe the real-time characterization of microscale unit operations for use in bioprocessing. The operation and benefits of using a microscale fluid interface for the Raman spectrographic characterizationof the process stream in real-time will be described.
