Scale-down is an important consideration in minimizing cost and risk during process development. This paper presents an overview of scale-down considerations for catalytic and noncatalytic reactors, separations steps, and physical property measurement apparatus, as applied to pilot plant and bench-scale units. Best practices for integration of scaled-down units in process pilots are also discussed.
