Recently due to the high oil price and environmental regulations, reduction of energy consumption becomes a global issue. Especially in the petrochemical industry, it is imperative for improving profitability and sustainability. Development of an eco-industrial park (EIP) draws attention as a promising approach of the existing industrial complex for improving the economic performance and reducing environmental effect simultaneously. The objective of an EIP is the minimization of material and energy consumption and output environmental loads by construction of recycle network for raw material, waste, and energy. Utilization of waste-heat from industry will bring on not only economic and environmental benefits due to reduction of energy consumption, but also social benefit. In this study a novel mathematical model of utilizing waste-heat for an eco-industrial park is developed. The MILP model has included the waste-heat exchange network for the collaboration between industry and community. The model is applied to regional energy system with the heat demand profiles and the candidate locations of the energy banks. The optimal waste-heat utilization network to minimize total energy consumption is determined. The fuel costs can be reduced by recycling waste-steam and waste-water as well as by configuring linkages from industry to community. The global waste-heat utilization can lead to major fossil fuel energy and emission reductions.

This research was supported by the Program for the Construction of Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) which was conducted by the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation (KICOX) and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE).
