Ammonia is one of the most produced chemicals in the world and is mainly synthesized from natural gas. It is utilized in multiple applications, fertilizers, refrigerants, explosives, and waste water treatments. In addition, Ammonia is employed in the industrial production of rubber, leather and paper. Next to Hydrogen, Ammonia is also considered a carbon free liquid fuel.
Liquefied Ammonia (LNH3) is a cryogenic fluid like liquefied natural gas (LNG). Therefore, production and transportation of LNH3 requires technology that is analogous to LNG technology. Rotating machinery is an important part of this cryogenic fluid technology, particularly if these fluids are flammable and corrosive like LNG and Ammonia. The presented paper gives a survey about the design and application of cryogenic rotating machinery for LNG and LNH3.
