The paper considers two alternative feed types for the manufacture of petrochemicals: biomass and coal. The economics are examined and available technologies are reviewed. Finally a side-by-side comparsion is made of a coal-to-polyolefins complex (China); an E/P based cracker in the Middle East and a liquids cracker (also in China).
