Petroleum Development Oman is engaged in improving its performance in process safety management (PSM). Lloyd's Register has assisted them to develop a set of Key Performance Indicators that address their weaknesses in PSM. The development process is described in this paper in detail. The lessons learned on development of appropriate lead indicators that do not clash with the safety culture of the organisation are detailed. These include the number of KPIs that are introduced, the sequencing of introduction of KPIs, the associated publicity and training and the reporting of the metrics to management at all levels in the organisation.
