This paper will provide an overview of the Operator Handheld Computer Project that is currently being executed within LyondellBasell Industries. The scope of this corporate project involves replacing the use of outside operator paper reading sheets with handheld computers. The project has two primary objectives. The first objective is to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the outside field operators by integrating the use handheld computers into their job activities. These activities include process and equipment data capture, data trending, and process equipment troubleshooting and maintenance. The second objective is to establish a system where this collected data can be readily reviewed and analyzed by other process support personnel. Anticipated benefits include strengthening the existing Operating Discipline process, improving process equipment reliability, facilitating required environmental reporting, electronically capturing corrective action best practices, and facilitating unit optimization efforts. This paper will include a summary of the project's background, objective, scope, justification, critical success factors, and implementation plan. Examples of actual benefits observed to date will also be included.
