(106e) Energy Systems – What Metrics and Boundaries Are Relevant?

Analyses of energy systems include material & energy balances, life cycle assessments focused on environmental metrics, analyses of selected system design and operation parameters, and many types of financial analyses. The relevant metrics and boundaries for an energy system depend on many factors. There is no consensus on a methodology for evaluating energy systems. Defining the boundaries, selecting metrics, and obtaining consistent data to carry out energy system evaluations require the breadth of the engineering profession. The AIChE is engaged in projects with other professional societies, industry, the academic community, and government to address the question ?what metrics and boundaries are relevant'?
