A number of notable features are addressed that may be encountered in designing a large aboveground full containment LNG storage tank. The size and thickness of the inner tank, which is made of 9% Ni, is closely related to the specifications of design codes. The recent revisions of the relevant specifications and their implications toward a larger-sized tank are investigated in this study. In addition, some improvements are addressed that can be made in designing a large outer tank made of reinforced or prestressed concrete. A sample design of the world's largest LNG tank, with 250,000 m3 capacity, is proposed through this study.
