The U.S. chemical sector is a large, complex collection of chemical plants and infrastructures that use, produce, and transport chemicals and chemical-based products across the U.S. and that have significant impact on the broader global economy. To better understand how this sector is affected by manmade and natural disruptive events, in particular how these events affect the critical infrastructure upon which the sector relies, Sandia National Laboratories, through the National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC), has developed a firm-level value-chain model that simulates the sector's behavior before, during, and after these events. Detailed analyses of large chemical value chains over the last 3 years have generated important insights into the workings of the chemical sector that have not been available by using other modeling approaches.
