(34b) Start up Issues of Ethylene Plants
AIChE Spring Meeting and Global Congress on Process Safety
2011
2011 Spring Meeting & 7th Global Congress on Process Safety
The 23rd Ethylene Producers’ Conference
Ethylene Plant Rotating Equipment / Maintenance & Reliability Joint Paper Session
Monday, March 14, 2011 - 3:10pm to 3:45pm
This paper will discuss the following basic startup steps:
- Startup the offsite systems
- Startup the propylene and ethylene refrigeration compressors
- Startup the cracked gas cracking and associated facilities (heaters, quench section, dilution steam generation)
- Startup the fractionation facilities
- Ready for hydrocarbon feed in the furnaces
Discussions will focus on the impact the rotating equipment (e.g. cracked gas compressor, etc.) has in the overall plant startup sequence. Key interfaces with the offsite utilities. Upstream and downstream facilities will also be addressed. Discussion of the recommended post-construction and pre-commissioning timing for the key systems (e.g. high pressure steam generation, cracked gas facilities, fractionation systems, instrumentation systems, etc.) will also be addressed and discussed in more detail.
The installation, preparation and pre-tests of the compressors will be a presented.
A key objective is to start-up the plant achieving on-specification products within one day after the hydrocarbon feed is introduced to the furnaces.
