Advanced process control applications are not often considered to handle utilities control problems. With energy reduction becoming an increased focus, utilization of advanced control for utilities is being reconsidered. Two application of advanced control using commercially available MPC software were recently implemented on utilities systems: one on a refining / olefins complex fuel gas system, the other on a high-pressure steam system at an olefins plant. In both cases, significant energy reductions were achieved.
