Isomalk-2 is a broad range isomerization technology used to boost the octane number of C5 – C6 hydrocarbon streams.  This process utilizes a robust platinum-based mixed metal oxide catalyst that works effectively at low temperatures, while delivering greater stability against the influence of catalyst poisons. The system does not require feed dryers or bone-dry feed.  Hydrogen consumption is reduced, and the catalyst is recoverable from spikes in water or sulfur.

The Isomalk-2 technology may be used in ‘once-through’ mode, or with recycle of low-octane n-pentane and n-hexane, depending on the refinery fuel balance. There are commercial examples with all modes of operation, in new and revamped units by other well-known competitors.  The Isomalk-2 process is the leading process in terms of lowest CAPEX, OPEX, and ease of operation.

Narrative includes:

  • Background of technology
  • Catalyst versatility: chlorinated alumina, zeolite and mixed metal oxide
  • Technology yield comparisons
  • Modes of application with recycle schemes
  • Relative capital and operating costs compared to design options and other technologies
  • Case studies for revamp and grassroots units
