Thermodynamic power cycles at cryogenic temperatures require new and different designs and materials than there are in conventional power plants operating at high temperature.

The working fluids in cryogenic power cycles are liquefied gases like ammonia, nitrogen and hydrocarbon gases. Most of these cryogenic working fluids are flammable or corrosive or both.

The development of a particular design of a two phase pump expander for liquefied propane gas was necessary to meet the requirements for a reliable and safe operation of the rotating machinery within an efficient cryogenic power cycle. The applications and the design of two-phase pump expanders for liquefied propane gas as working fluid are presented and the performance characteristics discussed.
