In any ethylene plant, the dilution steam generator system remains the most critical component, regardless of feedstock being processed. The recovery of water, and the production of good quality dilution steam can be challenging processes. The quench water and dilution steam generation systems are closely linked and adjusting specific operational procedures and chemical programs can help optimize overall unit performance. This paper will review the fundamental goals for all sections of the system including quench water tower, separator, coalescer, process water stripper and steam generator.  Potential problems such as corrosion, emulsification, fouling, and salt entrainment are significant operational problems that can reduce steam production and affect plant efficiency and profitability. Identification of these problems, as well as available operational and chemical solutions will be presented.
