Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) is an established technique for the determination of the required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) as required by Functional Safety Standards IEC61508 and IEC61511/ISA84. This presentation uses a case study to review how LOPA fits into the overall Safety Instrumented System (SIS) lifecycle, addresses the issues in performing assessments, identifies common mistakes that are made and the potential consequences if LOPA is applied incorrectly.
