The development of explosion-proof high temperature imaging cameras allows for continuous monitoring of ethylene furnace operations. These camera imaging systems enable automatic and visual detection of pin hole leaks and tube failures facilitating a quick response to upset conditions. Imaging cameras work off the visual wavelengths and provide a two-dimensional view and temperature measurements of the tubes which is more accurate than thermocouples and IR probes since the system is calibrated to ASTM standards. In addition, visual images of the furnace burners automatically detects flame detachment, smoking burners and flame shape in order to increase burner efficiency, save energy and to improve operating safety. Illustrations of existing furnace camera installation will be presented along with case studies showing  the advantages of process cameras  in furnace applications.
