(44aa) Complex BMS Made Simple

Complex BMS systems with multiple fuels and multiple burners have long presented a struggle for engineers and operators alike. This presentation will cover the methods used to simplify the implementation of a complex BMS in DeltaV SIS. The approach to design and use of standardized sequence modules and graphics greatly increases operator awareness of the operating conditions of the BMS. Included in this presentation will be a description of the design philosophy, the configuration standards, and the approach to operator graphics.

 A three step approach is implemented. Break the BMS sequences down in to incremental parts that are easy to understand. Develop standard modules that implement these parts individually. Use a graphical interface the represents these individual parts in an easy to understand way for the operator. This approach is highly scalable to meet various complex BMS implementations.

With this approach it is easy to take a complex BMS and break it down in to small and simple to understand pieces. This allows greater alignment and understanding between the safety engineer, configurator, and operator. Ease of use and troubleshooting for the operator is also greatly increased through a standard set of graphics that show actions needed and first outs for trips.

Through this approach it is possible to take the design of how a complex BMS needs to function and actually implement that design cleanly and simply. An accurate system to capture the first out for a trip or loss of a permissive and also indication of the current state and actions needed to progress forward is needed to increase operator knowledge of what is going on in the BMS at all times.
