(85e) Raschig Super-Ring is Pushing the FRI Test Column to New Limits

Fractionation Research Inc. (FRI) is the most modern test institute in the world performing random packing tests under rectification conditions in an industrial scaled test column. FRI is testing random packings since more than 50 years under low, medium and high pressure conditions and has created one of the worlds largest data base for comparing packing efficiencies, pressure drops and capacities.

Beside the development of most modern packing generations over the past decades also tower internals like distributors, hold down plates and support plates have seen great improvements by design. High performance tower internals used 10 or 20 years ago in mass transfer columns are nowadays considered to be low performance devices especially in use with high performance packings.

Based on most recent FRI tests Raschig is able to disclose an impressive research program that underlines the impact of “old fashioned” and “new fashioned” high performance tower internals on Raschig Super-Ring’s fluid dynamics and mass transfer characteristics. Last but not least the conclusions will demonstrate the importance of tower internal designs on packing performance in industrial columns.

Raschig Jaeger Technologies are very well known for troubleshooting as well as revamping cases of all kinds of packings including high performance third generation devices. Samples of such troubleshooting and revamp cases will be also presented.
